A Meta employee built a tool called “Second Brain.” It runs on Claude. It indexes internal documents and surfaces answers without requiring anyone to dig through folders, Slack threads, or shared drives to find what they need.

Mark Zuckerberg is using it as his chief of staff.

Not a chatbot. Not a “summarize this PDF” tool. A system that pulls from product dashboards, engineering updates, and strategic planning documents. That compiles briefings before key meetings. That flags when a project’s stated goals drift from its original approval parameters.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the agent “allows the chief executive to access data faster than traditional hierarchical channels would permit.”

Read that again.

The CEO of the most AI-invested company on earth built a system to route around his own org chart — to recover context that was getting lost in transit between people.


What he actually built

The coverage has mostly gone in the wrong direction. Headlines about “AI replacing managers.” Speculation about layoffs. One take called it a “CEO avatar.”

That’s not what this is.

What Zuckerberg built — or commissioned — is a context retrieval and coordination layer. It doesn’t make decisions. It doesn’t replace judgment. It surfaces what’s already decided, tracks where things are drifting from plan, and compresses information that would otherwise arrive through five different people across three channels over two days.

The agent’s defining behavior: it delivers summaries after meetings and flags details the CEO may have missed.

That’s not intelligence. That’s coordination infrastructure.

The problem it’s solving isn’t “what should we build next?” It’s “what did we already decide, what’s open, and what slipped through?”

That’s the open loop problem. It doesn’t go away when you get smarter tools. It gets worse.


Why he had to build it himself

Here’s what’s interesting.

Zuckerberg runs one of the most engineering-capable organizations in the world. Meta builds its own AI models, its own infrastructure, its own chips. If this solution existed as a product you could buy, deploy, and configure for a CEO in a week — they would have bought it.

A Meta employee built it instead. Using someone else’s model (Anthropic’s Claude). As a side project.

That’s the tell.

The intelligence is available. The model is available. The use case is obvious — everyone who runs a complex operation has the same problem. But the layer that turns a model into a coordination system? The part that understands your context, indexes your institutional history, tracks what’s committed and what’s unresolved, and surfaces the right thing at the right moment?

That doesn’t exist yet as infrastructure. Not for Zuckerberg. Not for anyone.

So he had it built for himself.


The pattern this reveals

Zuckerberg’s agent isn’t running in isolation. According to reporting, Meta employees have created environments where personal agents communicate directly to complete tasks on behalf of users. One agent fetches context. Another drafts. Another routes. The agent network is already forming inside the most AI-forward organization in the world.

And even there — at the frontier — the problem isn’t intelligence. The models are good enough. The problem is the layer above the models that turns isolated AI actions into coordinated system behavior.

The 80% of Fortune 500 companies now running active AI agents (per Microsoft’s February 2026 data) are discovering the same thing. Agents that execute beautifully. Agents that leave open threads. Commitments made, decisions triggered, context generated — and no system tracking what’s still unresolved.

The coordination layer is missing everywhere. Zuckerberg’s solution is his own internal build, inaccessible to anyone else.


The reframe

This is not a story about an AI-native CEO staying ahead of the curve.

It’s a story about a gap in the infrastructure.

Every operator who runs something complex — a team, a company, a client portfolio — has the same information problem. Too many threads. Too much context moving through too many channels. Decisions that get made but don’t get logged. Loops that open and never close. The mental overhead of just tracking what’s current, what’s committed, and what needs your attention.

The current answer to that problem is human intermediaries. Chiefs of staff. Executive assistants. Project managers. Slack messages forwarded from one channel to another.

Zuckerberg’s internal build replaces that layer with software. It works because someone built it specifically for his context, with access to his systems, trained on his institutional history.

That’s not a scalable solution for everyone else.

The infrastructure gap is real. And right now, if you’re not at Meta, you don’t have a coordination layer. You have a stack of tools that don’t talk to each other, don’t remember what matters, and don’t close the loop.

The layer that Zuckerberg’s team built internally — that’s what’s missing from the market. Not a smarter model. Not a faster chat interface.

Infrastructure that understands your context and closes the loop.
